Controls allow users to dynamically modify data displayed within a dashboard. When controls are set to ‘Put on: Columns/Rows’, they let users alter the x and y axes of a chart. The ‘Put on: Split’ setting allows to add a third dimension to the chart. This functionality lets users customize their charts by choosing particular variables or attributes.
Put on: Columns | The variable will populate the Y-axis |
Put on: Rows | The variable will populate the X-axis |
Put on: Split | The variable will be added as a third dimension to the chart, altering the data visualization without replacing the axes |
This control-widget interaction is straightforward: select a control and connect it with a chart choosing ‘Put on’ in the command panel on the top left-hand side of the chart.
By selecting a specific data attribute using the control, users can customize how the data is organized and visualized on their chart. This provides flexibility in chart construction, enabling users to focus on specific data points or compare attributes more effectively.
Use case: Brand Awareness Trends
We have a Brand Awareness Trend chart and want to let users selectively display specific data waves on the Y-axis. This allows users to examine trends across one or multiple waves. Main steps:
Create a control that contains all the waves we want to display.;
Ensure that the control selection mode is set to ‘Multiple’;
Assign the control as ‘Put on: Columns’.
In VIEW mode select different waves to recalculate the chart data.
Use case: KPI selection
We can add multiple controls that simultaneously operate on the columns, rows and/or split and switch different KPIs (e.g. brand awareness, brand consideration, and brand usage) on the axes. See the clip below for an example of two controls assigned to the columns (Y-axis) and rows (X-axis) of a chart:
The Control-Widget interactions for GRID-REQUEST
If your chart is based on a grid-request, a Variables/Features assignment is available instead of Columns/Rows. The principle is the same, only for grid requests, you must place the full variable into the control before putting it on as 'Variables'.(use option selection ‘All’).
