Color consistency and repeatability are very important for every DataTile project, as is selecting an appropriate color scheme.
The color management in the Database settings
A default color palette is automatically generated when you upload a database. If the default set of colors is not suitable, you can customize it in the database settings.
Here you can remove existing colors or change the HEX codes;
You can add new colors one by one. The newly added color is always black, and since the system does not allow two similar colors, you need to change it before adding the next one:
by HEX code;
by RGB code;
by picking colors from the palette.
These colors will be used for any chart built on this project.
If you have administrator rights, you can change the color settings at the server level.
Color regimes for charts
The major color management is made by selecting color regimes in the chart settings.
Four color regimes are available, which can be selected in the ‘Series’ tab while editing a chart.
Sticky colors
This regime should be used when ‘color-series’ consistency is required across the entire dashboard. The sticky colors regime implies deliberately selecting a color for a series with a particular label, after which the color becomes 'sticky' and appears next to that label on other charts thereafter. To use sticky colors effectively you should have identical labels from chart to chart.
Sticky colors are marked with a small black arrow.
In the 'sticky' color regime, you can use any color, not necessarily from the set of colors defined in project settings.
To cancel color binding, click on the “Reset” button in the color menu.
Color palette
This regime applies the default database palette, where each series on a chart is assigned the next color from the project color set. If the color set has fewer colors than the series on the chart, the colors will repeat. This repetition can negatively impact visualization clarity, so we recommend expanding the color set in the database settings.
Monochrome
All series will be colored in one chosen color, but the editing will be available after that. It can be useful for some projects or separate charts that require a subdued color scheme. Alternatively, one series within the monochrome regime can be recolored to be more visible.
Please note that conditional formatting takes precedence over the monochrome regime. If bar color is used as an indicator, the color will change according to the conditional formatting rules.
Colors edited in the monochrome regime become sticky. To revert to the default monochrome palette, use the ‘Reset’ button.
Gradient
Gradient mode differs from monochrome mode by varying the color intensity of the series, using shades of the same color. This is an excellent choice for projects requiring a subtle and understated style.
Managing colors in Meta-Editor
The system also supports rigid color binding to specific option labels at the database level. This is particularly convenient if you have a fixed list of variable options that will remain unchanged for a long time.
Go to Meta-Editor, select any variable, and assign a color using a color picker next to each option.
